Teacher's Manual

PART 1 discusses the learning problems that prevent intelligent students from learning to read all words accurately and the author's rationale for overcoming them.

PART 2 explains the “why” and “how” of the daily exercise format.

PART 3 are the Unit presentations that include, for the teacher, important information pertinent to each unit.

Phoneme Flash Cards

These Include all letters and letter-combinations used in the daily format's first exercise for meeting each unit's objectives:

  • Students will be able to rapidly read the names and vocalize the sounds of all letter-sound associations in Unit I through the current Unit with 100% accuracy.
  • Students will be able to respond with the letter names of letter-sound associations in Unit 1 through the current Unit with 100% accuracy when their sounds are given in rapid-fire fashion, one after the other.

Oral Reading Books

Included in Units 1-38 are thousands of one-syllable and multisyllabic words in lists, each list followed with informative context that includes the list's words, other words comprised of only learned letter-sound associations, and learned sight words introduced in the current and previous units.

Also included are original stories and adaptations of well-known classics, such as Gulliver’s Travels, Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves, The Emperors New Clothes, and "fractured" fairy tales. As in the lists, words in all stories, original and adapted, are learned sight words and phonetic words comprised of letter-sound associations introduced in the current and previous units.

The oral reading is the application of decoding skills learned in the daily format's first three exercises, to meet these objectives:

  • In context, students will be able to read aloud all words selected from Unit 1 through the current Unit with 90-100% accuracy. Evaluation using Test “A” from the appropriate Unit in the Cumulative Test Book.
  • From a one-hundred-word list, students will be able to read aloud all multisyllabic words selected from Unit 1 through the current Unit with 90-100% accuracy. Evaluation using the appropriate Unit test in the Cumulative Word Lists Test Book.

Cumulative Test Book

  • Test A, an oral reading-in-context test. Evaluates the student's competency in reading sentences whose words include learned sight words and others comprised of all letter-sounds learned from Unit 1 through the just completed unit. Administered individually.
  • Test B, a phonetic written test of one-syllable and multisyllabic words. Evaluates the student’s competency in translating dictated words into written cursive letters and sequencing them correctly from left to right. These words are comprised of all letter-sounds taught from Unit l through the unit just completed. Administered to the class.
  • Test C, a dictated sight word test. Evaluates students' competency when writing in cursive the sight words taught in Unit l through the just completed unit. Administered to the class.

Cumulative Word Lists Test Book

Each list (with the exception of the tests for units 1 and 2) consists of 100 multisyllabic words selected from unit 1 through the unit just completed, comprised of all letter-sound combinations found in those units.

Silent Reading Language Lessons

Silent reading lessons develop vocabulary and reinforce decoding skills learned in the exercises of the daily format. Each lesson's controlled text includes learned sight words and phonetic words comprised of learned letter-sounds. Students copy the sentences in cursive writing, filling in the blanks with words chosen from a provided list, after a teacher-led discussion of the meanings of the words.

Also, included with your initial order:

  • A free audio tape for the instructor, demonstrating the correct pronunciation of all individual letter/sounds (with extra attention to l and r), and of combinations of letters (such as -tious, -cial, -nt, -eous). It also provides a detailed explanation of the pronunciation of accented and unaccented vowel sounds.
  • A set of reproducible Oral Reading Diagnostic Tests, complete with instructions for administering and scoring.
